25 Bible Verses About Gratitude and Giving Thanks to God

Gratitude Is Not Just Politeness

When the Bible talks about gratitude, it is not describing good manners.

Gratitude in Scripture is a spiritual discipline — a deliberate reorientation of the heart toward God. It is the recognition that everything you have been given is undeserved and comes from someone who loves you.

The Greek word eucharistia — from which we get "Eucharist" — means thanksgiving. It appears throughout the New Testament as something to be practiced constantly, in prayer, in worship, in community, and in ordinary daily life.

Gratitude is not reserved for when life is going well. The most striking gratitude passages in the Bible were written from prison cells, wilderness seasons, and exile. Gratitude in the Bible is not a response to circumstances — it is a response to God's character.

These 25 verses anchor what a grateful heart looks like according to Scripture.

25 Bible Verses About Gratitude

1. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

The clearest direct command on gratitude in the New Testament. Note: in all circumstances, not for all. You are not called to fake gratitude for painful things — you are called to find God's goodness within any situation.

2. Psalm 100:4

"Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name."

The classic invitation to worship. Gratitude is not the result of worship — it is the door you walk through to enter it.

3. Philippians 4:6-7

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds."

Gratitude is the companion of prayer that produces supernatural peace. You cannot manufacture this peace directly — it comes as a byproduct of bringing everything to God with thankfulness.

4. Colossians 3:15-17

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts... And be thankful... singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Gratitude here is a whole-life posture — not just prayer but attitude, song, word, and action.

5. Psalm 107:1

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever."

The reason for gratitude is not what God has done but who God is. His character — good, steadfast, faithful — is the permanent anchor for a grateful heart.

6. James 1:17

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights."

This verse transforms ordinary life. Health, relationships, work, food, beauty — all good things are traced back to a specific source. Gratitude is simply acknowledging the source.

7. Psalm 34:1

"I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips."

David wrote this while fleeing for his life and pretending to be insane to escape his enemies. Gratitude at all times is a decision, not a feeling.

8. Colossians 2:7

"Rooted and built up in him... and overflowing with thankfulness."

Spiritual maturity overflows into gratitude. A deeply rooted Christian life naturally produces thanksgiving.

9. Hebrews 13:15

"Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise — the fruit of lips that openly profess his name."

This verse calls gratitude a sacrifice — meaning it costs something. Praise in a painful season is an offering, not a performance.

10. Ephesians 5:20

"Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."

The scope — "everything," "always" — is extreme. It becomes livable only when you understand that you are thanking God not because everything is good but because he is present in everything.

11. Job 1:21

"The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised."

Job said this after losing his children and all his property in a single day. It is the most tested gratitude in the Bible — and it is the one that was not retracted.

12. 2 Corinthians 9:15

"Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!"

Paul is speaking of Jesus. The ultimate object of gratitude is the gospel itself — a gift so large it cannot be fully described.

13. Psalm 9:1

"I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds."

Whole-heart gratitude that spills into storytelling. Telling others what God has done is itself an act of thanksgiving.

14. 1 Chronicles 16:34

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever."

This refrain repeats throughout the Old Testament because Israel needed to say it again and again. The love of God endures — even when circumstances seem to say otherwise.

15. Luke 17:17-18

"Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?"

Jesus' question after healing ten lepers, only one of whom returned to give thanks. Nine out of ten people received a miracle and moved on without gratitude. This is not a rebuke to despise but a mirror to look into.

16. Romans 1:21

"Although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, and their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened."

Ingratitude is listed here as a root of spiritual decline. Thankfulness, conversely, keeps the mind clear and the heart oriented toward truth.

17. Psalm 136:1

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever."

This entire Psalm is a refrain — 26 verses, each ending with "His love endures forever." Gratitude is built through repetition and remembrance.

18. 1 Timothy 4:4-5

"For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer."

Receiving ordinary gifts — food, rest, pleasure — with gratitude makes them holy. Gratitude is what sanctifies everyday life.

19. Psalm 50:23

"Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me, and to the blameless I will show my salvation."

Gratitude is worship. The "sacrifice of thanksgiving" in the Old Testament was one of the most significant offerings.

20. Daniel 6:10

"Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before."

Daniel did this under a law that made prayer punishable by death in a lion's den. Gratitude as habit is stronger than gratitude as feeling.

21. Revelation 7:12

"Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!"

The final picture of gratitude — all creation giving thanks to God for eternity. What we practice here is a foretaste of what is coming.

22. Jonah 2:9

"But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you."

Jonah said this from inside a fish, in the dark, with no plan and no certainty about what came next. Gratitude under those conditions is the real thing.

23. Colossians 4:2

"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."

Prayer, alertness, and gratitude belong together. A person who prays with gratitude sees more of what God is doing.

24. Psalm 69:30

"I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving."

Gratitude expressed in song has always been central to Jewish and Christian worship — because music carries thankfulness in a way that prose cannot.

25. Matthew 15:36

"Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples."

Jesus gave thanks before a meal — even in the middle of ministry, even with insufficient resources. Gratitude before you see how things work out is called faith.

How to Build a Grateful Heart Practically

1. Start with what is still true

When life is hard, gratitude cannot start with circumstances. It starts with character — God is good, his love endures, he has not changed.

2. Recall specific moments

Abstract gratitude fades. Specific memories sustain it. Write down three things God has done that you are still grateful for.

3. Thank before you receive

Matthew 15:36 and multiple similar passages show Jesus giving thanks before the outcome was clear. Gratitude in advance is an act of faith.

A Prayer of Gratitude

God, I want to thank you — not because everything is easy but because you are faithful. Thank you for what I have and for what I almost had and lost. Thank you for the hard seasons that formed me. Thank you for your love that does not depend on my performance. Let gratitude become the natural language of my heart. Amen.

Final Thought

Gratitude does not mean pretending life is perfect. It means keeping God in view even when circumstances are not. A thankful heart is not naive — it is deeply anchored.
