Blessing a New Life With Scripture
A new baby is one of life's most profound moments — and Scripture gives us words to mark it with the weight it deserves. Whether for a baby shower, a dedication ceremony, or simply to encourage new parents, these 25 verses celebrate and bless the arrival of a new child.
On God Forming Each Child
1. Psalm 139:13-14 (Most read at baby dedications)
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
David's meditation on God's intimate knowledge of each person from the very beginning of their existence. Every baby is a purposefully formed work of God.
2. Jeremiah 1:5
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
God's words to Jeremiah — but the principle extends: every person is known by God before birth, with a purpose set before time.
3. Isaiah 44:2
"This is what the Lord says — he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you."
4. Psalm 71:6
"From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother's womb. I will ever praise you."
5. Job 10:11-12
"Did you not clothe me with skin and flesh and knit me together with bones and sinews? You gave me life and showed me kindness, and in your providence watched over my spirit."
On Children as Gift and Blessing
6. Psalm 127:3 (The foundational new baby verse)
"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him."
Every child is a gift from God — not a burden, not an accident, not a possession — a trust from the Creator.
7. Psalm 127:4-5
"Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them."
8. Psalm 128:3
"Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table."
9. Mark 10:16
"And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them."
Jesus's own welcoming of children — a model for the church's embrace of every new life.
10. Matthew 18:3
"And he said: 'Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.'"
For the New Parents
11. Proverbs 22:6
"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."
12. Deuteronomy 6:6-7
"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."
13. Proverbs 17:6
"Children's children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children."
14. 3 John 1:4
"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth."
15. Isaiah 49:15
"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!"
God's own love for each person compared to — and exceeding — the most powerful human love: a mother's love for her nursing infant.
For Baby Dedications
16. 1 Samuel 1:27-28
"I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord."
Hannah's words at Samuel's dedication — the biblical model for giving a child back to God.
17. Luke 18:16
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."
18. Psalm 22:9-10
"Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother's breast. From birth I was cast on you; from my mother's womb you have been my God."
Blessings for the Child
19. Numbers 6:24-26
"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace."
The ancient priestly blessing — timeless for pronouncing God's favor over a new child.
20. Ephesians 6:1-3
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother' — which is the first commandment with a promise — 'so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.'"
21. Psalm 1:1-3
"Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked... whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither."
22. 2 Timothy 3:15
"And how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."
Paul writes about Timothy, raised in faith from infancy by his mother and grandmother — a reminder that Scripture given early takes deep root.
On God's Plans for the Child
23. Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
24. Romans 8:28
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
25. Psalm 23:6
"Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
A blessing to speak over a newborn: all the days of their life — God's goodness in pursuit of them.
